The Cameroon academic and Bali communities mourn the loss of Dr. Mathew B. Gwanfogbe, who passed away on May 30, 2024 in Cameroon. Dr. Gwanfogbe was a distinguished scholar, dedicated educator, and esteemed leader who, before his retirement, served as the Vice-Chancellor of the Bamenda University of Science and Technology. His career was marked by a profound commitment to advancing education and historical scholarship in Cameroon and beyond.
Dr. Gwanfogbe was born on September 25, 1943, in Bali Nyonga, Cameroon. His impressive academic achievements reflect his lifelong dedication to learning and scholarship. He earned a PhD in History from the University of London, and his extensive research and publications have significantly contributed to the history of education in Cameroon, making him a respected authority in his field.
Before his tenure at the Bamenda University of Science and Technology, Prof. Gwanfogbe served as the Director-delegate of the Ecole Normale Supérieure (ENS Annex) in Bambili, where he played a crucial role in shaping the institution’s academic standards and fostering an environment of excellence. He had previously held many impactful teaching and administrative positions in the public education sector in Cameroon.
A member of the Cameroon Historical Society, Dr. Gwanfogbe also served as the editor-in-chief of the Pantikar Journal of History. His work with these organizations underscored his commitment to preserving and promoting Cameroon’s rich historical heritage. Additionally, he was a member of the British History of Education Society, reflecting his international engagement with the academic community.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Dr. Gwanfogbe was honored as a Knight of the Cameroon Order of Merit. His dedication extended beyond his professional endeavors; he was a long-standing member of the Bali Historical Society, contributing to the preservation of Bali local history and culture.
Dr. Gwanfogbe’s legacy is one of unwavering dedication to education, historical research, and community service. His profound impact will be felt for generations through his published works and the countless lives he touched as an educator and leader. His books, Changing Regimes and Educational Development in Cameroon (2016) and Basel Mission Education in Cameroon (2020) published by Spears Books, will continue to inspire scholars and students of the history of education in Cameroon for decades.
He is survived by his beloved family, who were a source of great pride and joy in his life. A memorial service to celebrate Prof. Gwanfogbe’s life and legacy will be communicated subsequently by his family.
