Spears Catalogue Spring 2022

Dear Readers,

Welcome to our Spring 2022 catalogue, filled with the sort of refreshing content our platform has come to be known for.

I’d like to draw your attention to some of the powerful books that cover the breadth and depth of the kind of knowledge we care about.  Perspectives in Curriculum Studies by two seasoned educationists is a comprehensive textbook for graduate students of Curriculum Studies and Instruction, and a guide for education practitioners that details contemporary curriculum concepts, principles and applications in the field. Scholars in every discipline from the humanities to the sciences would find this volume most instructive. What God has Put Asunder is prescient in its dramatization of the root causes of the conflict that has engulfed the Cameroons since 2016. My Night in Captivity recounts Cardinal Tumi’s ordeal at the hands of Amba boys while accompanying the Fon of Nso to Kumbo. He concludes the booklet with a discussion of how the “Anglophone” crisis could be resolved.

This volume also features three of our latest poetry titles, each of which brings unique perspectives on the human condition. Escape from Prison is a riveting collection of poems, wherein the author in visceral verses, invites us to share the thoughts, travails and triumphs of a once incarcerated woman who’s found her freedom in poetry and more. Narrow Escapes is a poetry collection about the coronavirus pandemic. The poems are shaped by and reflect the persistent fear induced by the ubiquity of the virus and the accentuation of life’s uncertainty as never experienced before. Shades of Sorrow, Tears and Laughter is a poignant book of witty, reflective, sophisticated, and subversive poems that find meaning in unexpected places.

Also remarkable are three fictional works that will thrill and intrigue readers. The Vacuum Chamber is a novella of two short stories that combine magical realism and a most engrossing story about romance and magic that will leave you eager for more. The Radio and Other Stories channel memories of a youthful protagonist who reminisces about his coming of age in a rural community that has shaped every fabric of his being. Paradise of Love and Pain foregrounds the tensions between an innocent teenager and her mother as she grapples with the forces of greed and lust in a fast-urbanising world.

Finally, we are pleased to showcase our growing selection of children’s literature as well as a new bilingual title, Mungaka Word Book. The latter highlights our continued determination to inspire and encourage literacy in African languages – in part as an effort in decolonizing knowledge production and dissemination. We hope you will cherish these new titles in the months and years to come.

Happy Reading and a very Happy New Year 2022!
