Joseph Ajale Ekane dedicated over three decades to a distinguished career in education in Cameroon. Beginning in 1957 and spanning until 1967, he served as a primary school teacher under the Basel Mission in Victoria, Kake, and Tombel, respectively. His illustrious service in these institutions led to his appointment as Headmaster of the Basel Mission School Mwebah in Nninong, a role he fulfilled from 1965 to 1967. After pursuing advanced studies in education and pedagogy, Ekane earned a CAPCEG Certificate from Ecole Normale Superieure Annex, Bambili. He went on to teach at Bilingual Grammar School in Molyko, Buea, before transferring to GHS Limbe, where he held various roles, including Senior Discipline Master and ultimately Vice Principal – a position he held until his retirement in December 1994. His journey toward developing a resource for Akose language learning was sparked when a parent approached him, seeking instruction for their child in Akose or a recommendation for a suitable book.
Recognising the absence of such resources, Ekane decided to research and develop a language guide that would empower the Bakossi community to learn to read and write their language. Deeply committed to Akose language revitalisation and preservation, Ekane’s book combines thorough research with innovative practical exercises to make language learning accessible and engaging for learners of all ages. He firmly believes that language revitalisation is essential for safeguarding the rich heritage of Bakossi culture. Beyond his professional pursuits, Ekane is a devoted husband and proud father of six children. His interests include reading, writing, singing, sports, staying informed through news consumption, participating in Christian group gatherings, and engaging in Bakossi community meetings.
