Walter Gam Nkwi holds a PhD from the University of Leiden in social history/social anthropology. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of History, University of Buea, Cameroon and from 2019-2020 lectured at the institute of History, Faculty of Humanities, University of Leiden. He was a research fellow at the International Institute of Social History, Amsterdam from September to March 2013. Between 2014 and 2017 he was the Faculty officer in the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, University of Buea, and from September to November 2017 he was a senior research fellow at the African Studies Centre, Leiden.

He was the keynote speaker at the International Conference on Maritime Museums, Hamburg, Germany, 17-19 October 2018. He was African Oxford visiting fellow from April to June 2019. He belongs to several scientific research associations including the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA); West African Research Association (WARA)International Society of Oral Literature in Africa (ISOLA); World Economic History Congress (WEHC). His research interests focus on the intersections between history and ethnography. Amongst his publications are full length monographs, books chapters, journal articles and encyclopaedia entries.
